Meta has introduced a new video editing app for creators called Edits, aimed at competing with ByteDance’s popular short form video editor, CapCut. The launch comes months after CapCut was temporarily removed from app stores in the United States during the brief TikTok ban. Although CapCut has since returned, TikTok’s future in the country remains uncertain, positioning Meta to take advantage with Edits.
Available on both iOS and Android, Edits requires users to log in with their Instagram account. The app features five main tabs: Ideas, Inspiration, Projects, Record, and Insights. The Ideas tab allows creators to note video concepts and save reels, while the Inspiration tab provides trending audio and popular reels. Projects stores ongoing edits and uploaded videos, and Record enables in app filming.
Key tools include green screen background replacement, precise clip arrangement through a timeline, automatic captions in multiple languages, access to Instagram’s music library, AI powered cutouts, image animation, batch editing, frame rate control, alignment guides, auto detected beat markers, filters, transitions, teleprompter, AI restyling, keyframe animation, silence removal, custom audio import, live clip preview, and draft sharing via Instagram DM.
While both Edits and CapCut offer strong short form editing capabilities, CapCut currently has more advanced tools and a larger music library. CapCut also offers a web version and a paid subscription for premium features, while Edits is mobile only and free to use. However, Meta is expected to expand Edits with new functionality and potentially introduce paid features in the future, as confirmed by Instagram head Adam Mosseri.
