Meta is experimenting with AI chatbots

Meta is reportedly working on a new feature that will introduce customizable AI chatbots that could unexpectedly message you first. These chatbots will remember previous conversations and even follow up on things you’ve talked about before.

The feature, which has been linked to a project known as “Project Omni” by the data labeling company Alignerr, aims to “provide value for users and ultimately help to improve re-engagement and user retention.” According to Meta, the goal is to encourage more meaningful interactions with AI across their platforms.

For instance, an AI chatbot called “The Maestro of Movie Magic” might message you saying, “I hope you’re having a harmonious day! I wanted to check in and see if you’ve discovered any new favourite soundtracks or composers recently. Or perhaps you’d like some recommendations for your next movie night? Let me know, and I’ll be happy to help!”

A Meta spokesperson clarified, “After you initiate a conversation, AIs in Meta AI Studio can follow up with you to share ideas or ask additional questions. This allows you to continue exploring topics of interest and engage in more meaningful conversations with the AIs across our apps.”

These chatbots will only message users if they start the conversation first. If there’s no reply, the chatbot won’t reach out again. The follow-up message window is set at 14 days after the first contact, and the chatbot will only send a follow-up if the user has exchanged at least five messages during that period.

The feature is part of Meta’s AI Studio platform, which lets users build their own personalized chatbots with unique personalities and memories. This platform, which was launched last year, allows users to create bots for various purposes, such as a chef suggesting recipes or an interior designer offering decor advice. For influencers and creators, these bots can also handle fan interactions and respond to messages.

These bots can be kept private for personal use or shared with the public through links and stories. Users can even display them on their Facebook or Instagram profiles. Meta’s AI chatbots are similar to services like Character.AI and Replika, which also allow AI chatbots to start conversations and ask follow-up questions.

When asked how it plans to ensure the safety of its chatbots, a Meta spokesperson referred to several disclaimers, including one that warns the chatbots “may be inaccurate or inappropriate and should not be used to make important decisions.” The chatbots are not licensed professionals or experts.

Meta’s new feature is in line with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s efforts to address the “loneliness epidemic.” Earlier this year, court documents revealed that Meta anticipates its generative AI products could add between $2 billion and $3 billion in revenue this year, with projections suggesting that the business could reach up to $1.4 trillion by 2035.

This could eventually open the door to ads within the AI chatbots, as well as a potential subscription model. However, there’s no official word on how Meta plans to monetize these chatbots at this time.
