Meta introduces new content protection feature to help Facebook creators safeguard their Reels

Meta has announced a new content protection feature designed to help Facebook creators prevent their original Reels from being copied or misused across its platforms. The update allows Meta to detect when a creator’s Reel is being reused without permission. Once identified, creators can choose to block the visibility of the copied Reel on Facebook and Instagram. They can also track its performance on other accounts or add attribution links so viewers can find the original source.

Meta has explained that unoriginal content refers to posts that reuse another creator’s work repeatedly without credit. This includes videos, photos or text that are reposted without permission or any meaningful additions. The company said that it has no concern with creators who re share content while adding value through commentary, reactions or creative edits. Its focus is on reducing posts that rely entirely on someone else’s effort.

The new content protection update supports Meta’s wider plan to promote authentic creators and lower the amount of low quality and repetitive posts that often appear in users’ Feeds. The company said these changes are part of a long term effort to make content more relevant and ensure that genuine creators have a fair chance to be discovered.

As part of this plan, Meta aims to reduce unoriginal content that is shared without acknowledgment. Although the company supports creators who remix content with commentary or creative edits, it intends to limit direct reposting that does not offer credit or meaningful changes.

Accounts that frequently share duplicated content may temporarily lose access to monetisation. They may also see reduced reach across all their posts. Meta’s systems will downgrade the visibility of duplicate videos, and the company said it is testing new tools that automatically direct viewers to the original post.

These guidelines will be introduced gradually over the coming months. To help creators understand drops in reach, Meta has added post level insights to the professional dashboard. This feature highlights distribution issues and shows whether an account is at risk of penalties linked to recommendations or monetisation. Meta said that these updates reinforce its commitment to supporting and elevating genuine creators on Facebook.
