Meta in Early Talks with Google to Use Gemini AI for Ads

Meta is reportedly in early discussions with Google Cloud to explore the use of its Gemini models for improving advertising capabilities, according to a report.

The conversations are still at an initial stage and may not lead to an agreement. Google has declined to comment, while Meta has not yet responded to requests for comment.

According to people familiar with the matter, Meta staff have suggested fine-tuning Google’s Gemini and its open-source Gemma models using Meta’s advertising data to enhance ad targeting performance. The move indicates the challenges Meta continues to face in scaling its own AI systems, despite significant investments in research, infrastructure and talent.

Meta and Google remain fierce competitors in the global digital advertising market. Both companies have recently highlighted how their AI investments are strengthening their advertising businesses.

Last month, reports suggested Meta was also considering partnerships with either Google or OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, to enhance AI-driven features. These included more advanced conversational responses for Meta AI, its chatbot, and improved AI tools across its social media platforms such as Instagram and WhatsApp.
