Meta has expanded its AI-powered Reels translation feature on Instagram and Facebook to include Hindi and Portuguese, joining English and Spanish from the earlier rollout in August. This new update allows creators to translate and dub their Reels authentically before sharing them with a wider audience.
Instagram Head Adam Mosseri highlighted the need for the feature in an Instagram video:
“Most of the videos on Instagram are in a language you don’t speak, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t interested in them.”
Mosseri demonstrated the feature by dubbing his video in Hindi, Spanish, and Portuguese using Meta AI, with a similar demo on Mark Zuckerberg’s Instagram post.
How does Meta’s dubbed Reels feature work?
Meta’s AI mimics the creator’s voice, tone, and style to produce authentic translations of Reels. To make the dubbed videos feel even more natural, creators can enable a lip-syncing feature, which syncs the translated audio to match the creator’s mouth movements.
To ensure transparency, dubbed Reels will carry a clear label: “Translated with Meta AI”, so viewers know AI was used in creating the video.
User controls for translations
Viewers have full control to turn translations on or off or watch Reels in their original language. This can be done via the three-dot menu on the Reel, then selecting the audio and language section and choosing “Don’t translate.”
Unlike YouTube’s auto-dubbing, Meta’s rollout prioritizes consent and clarity, offering a dedicated AI label and explicit options both for creators and viewers.
Availability and eligibility
The translation feature will be available for creators with over 1,000 followers and all public Instagram accounts in countries where Meta AI is active.
How to translate Reels using Meta AI
When uploading a Reel, eligible creators will see a new option labeled “Translate your voice with Meta AI.” By selecting this, they can choose whether to enable lip-syncing. Creators can also preview the dubbed Reel before publishing and will receive a notification to review and approve the translation.
