Meta acquires Limitless as it looks to expand its AI wearable devices

Meta has acquired the artificial intelligence wearables startup Limitless. The company confirmed the acquisition on Saturday and stated that Meta’s long term vision played an important role in the decision. Limitless recently launched its first product, an AI powered Pendant that records nearby audio continuously and allows users to search for information through voice or text prompts. While the startup did not disclose financial details or explain any structural changes, it appears that it will continue to operate with some level of independence.

The homepage of the company now displays the message “Limitless has been acquired by Meta,” along with a video and a note from Co Founder and Chief Executive Dan Siroker. He said that the decision was driven by the need to scale the technology and speed up the development cycle of products designed to move towards personal superintelligence.

Siroker did not address the growing competition in the AI wearables space or the lack of new products after the Pendant. Instead, he shared an optimistic view and said, “We are no longer working on a weird fringe idea. We are building a future that now seems inevitable. We are not alone.”

He added that Meta and Limitless share a vision of bringing “personal superintelligence to everyone” and “building incredible AI enabled wearables.” This suggests that products under the Limitless brand may continue to be released after the acquisition.

The startup did not provide details about the value of the deal or any internal changes. However, the Limitless brand and Siroker’s leadership appear likely to remain. It is not clear whether the company will be placed under Meta’s Superintelligence Labs or its AI glasses focused Reality Labs.

The company also shared an update for existing users of the AI Pendant. Limitless will stop selling new devices, but current users will receive at least one year of free support. All existing users will also be upgraded to the Unlimited Plan at no extra cost. At the same time, non Pendant features, including Rewind, will be discontinued. To continue using the device, users must accept the updated Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

Users who do not wish to keep the device can export their data or delete it through the app. Siroker did not reveal any information about future products.
