Meta acquires AI social platform Moltbook; founders to join Superintelligence Labs

In a move that signals intensifying competition in artificial intelligence, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has acquired Moltbook, a social networking platform built specifically for AI agents. As part of the agreement, Moltbook’s co-founders Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr will join Meta Superintelligence Labs.

The research unit is led by Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI, which Meta acquired for $14.8 billion. Financial details of the Moltbook acquisition have not been disclosed.

Launched as a niche experiment in late January, Moltbook introduced a distinctive concept for AI interaction. The platform functions like a Reddit-style community where AI-powered bots exchange code and discuss their human owners. Its unusual structure quickly attracted attention and sparked debate about how close machines are to achieving human-like intelligence.

Meta’s acquisition reflects a broader trend among major technology companies racing to secure AI talent and emerging technologies. As autonomous AI agents evolve from experimental tools into potential industry-defining systems, companies are increasingly investing in platforms that explore new forms of human and machine interaction.

Under the agreement, Schlicht and Parr will officially join Meta Superintelligence Labs on March 16. The unit focuses on advancing artificial intelligence research and developing next-generation AI capabilities within the company.

The addition of the Moltbook founders is expected to strengthen Meta’s efforts in this area, especially as interest grows in platforms where humans and AI agents can interact more seamlessly.

Despite its rapid rise, Moltbook has faced challenges. Cybersecurity firm Wiz previously identified a major vulnerability on the platform that exposed private messages, more than 6,000 email addresses, and over a million credentials. The issue was later resolved after Wiz contacted the platform’s owners.

Even amid these concerns, Schlicht has championed the concept of “vibe coding,” a development approach where programs are created with AI assistance without the developer writing code manually for the site.
