Meross launches battery powered radar presence sensor with Matter over Thread support

Meross has introduced a new battery powered version of its presence sensor offering more flexibility in placement and easier installation. The MS605 is the updated model of the earlier MS600 and removes the need for a power cord thanks to its compact battery design.

The new MS605 runs on a single CR123A battery which the company says can last up to three years. Battery life may shorten in busy areas where the sensor activates frequently. The device is available for preorder through the Meross online store and is currently priced at 34.99 dollars for a limited period.

The move to battery power is supported by another major update. The MS605 now works with Matter over the low power Thread protocol. This is a shift from the previous MS600 which relied on Wi Fi for Matter compatibility. Users will need a Thread enabled hub to connect the MS605 to platforms such as Google Home Apple Home or Alexa, but it does not require a dedicated Meross hub.

In terms of design the MS605 looks similar to its predecessor and retains the adjustable mounting plate that can tilt up to ninety degrees and rotate fully to help users position the sensor accurately. The device has also been upgraded with an IP67 waterproof rating making it suitable for outdoor use.

The sensor continues to use a combination of light passive infrared and 24 GHz mmWave radar technologies to detect human movement or presence and distinguish people from non human motion such as moving curtains. The main trade off is a reduction in detection range. The MS605 has a motion range of six meters and a presence range of four meters down from the twelve and six meters offered by the earlier model.
