A new electric sedan is set to enter India’s luxury EV space as Mercedes-Benz prepares to reintroduce the CLA in an all-electric form.
Mercedes-Benz India has confirmed the launch of the CLA EV in April 2026. The CLA was earlier sold with petrol and diesel engines before being discontinued in 2020. The new generation will replace the A-Class sedan and also take over from the EQA and EQB electric SUVs in the company’s Indian lineup.
Battery and range details for India are yet to be announced. Globally, the CLA EV is offered in 2 versions: CLA 250+ and CLA 350, both using an 85 kWh battery. The CLA 250+ has a rear-mounted motor producing 268 hp and 335 Nm, with a claimed WLTP range of up to 792 km. The CLA 350 gets dual motors with all-wheel drive and delivers 349 hp and 515 Nm.
The EV uses an 800-volt electrical system that supports DC fast charging up to 320 kW. Mercedes-Benz says this can add nearly 300 km of range in about 10 minutes under ideal conditions.
The CLA is based on the company’s MMA electric platform. It is larger than the previous model, measuring 4,723 mm in length, 1,855 mm in width, and 1,468 mm in height, with a 2,790 mm wheelbase. Storage includes a 101-litre front trunk and a 405-litre boot.
Inside, the cabin follows a minimalist and screen-focused layout. It features a 10.25-inch digital driver display and a 14-inch touchscreen. A front passenger screen is offered globally, though India availability is not confirmed. Other features include a panoramic sunroof, 64-colour ambient lighting, a 16-speaker Burmester sound system with Dolby Atmos, powered and ventilated front seats, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, connected car tech, and the latest MBUX system with AI integration.
Safety equipment includes 8 airbags, a 360-degree camera with blind-spot monitoring, tyre-pressure monitoring, electronic parking brake, and advanced driver assistance systems. The car has also received a 5-star Euro NCAP rating.
The CLA EV is expected to be priced between Rs 55 lakh and Rs 60 lakh (ex-showroom). It will compete in price with models such as the BMW iX1, Volvo XC40 Recharge, Kia EV6, and the Tesla Model Y.
