In a plot that seemed straight out of a crime thriller, six men meticulously planned and executed a daring robbery at the State Bank of India’s (SBI) Nyamati branch in Karnataka, making off with 17.7 kg of gold. However, months of relentless investigation led the police to a crucial breakthrough, ultimately recovering the stolen treasure from a well in Usalampatti, Tamil Nadu.
The Heist and the Mastermind
The robbery, which occurred on October 28, 2024, left authorities grappling with minimal evidence. The culprits—Vijaykumar (30), Ajaykumar (28), Abhisheka (23), Chandru (23), Manjunath (32), and Paramananda (30)—painstakingly studied crime shows and online tutorials to execute the plan with surgical precision.
The mastermind, Vijaykumar, was driven by financial troubles and deep resentment towards the bank. Along with his brother Ajaykumar and brother-in-law Paramananda, he had lived in Nyamati for years, running a sweets business. The others were locals, familiar with the bank’s routines and vulnerabilities.
A Web of Criminal Networks
While unearthing the Nyamati gang, the investigation took a deeper turn, exposing a notorious bank robbery syndicate from Kakrala, Uttar Pradesh. This well-organized group had been orchestrating high-profile heists across southern India for over a decade.
“There are around five to six gangs operating in Kakrala and neighboring towns, committing organized thefts and robberies,” a police official revealed. These criminals targeted isolated bank branches, using gas cutters to break into vaults while ensuring they left behind no traces—no fingerprints, phone data, or CCTV evidence.
The Bigger Picture: Connecting the Dots
Investigators soon connected the Kakrala gang to multiple gold heists in Karnataka, including:
🔹 15 kg gold stolen from Karnataka Grameen Bank (Hosahalli, 2022)
🔹 4 kg gold looted from Bevuru Branch (2023)
The police launched an extensive cross-state manhunt, covering Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. Eventually, five Kakrala gang members—Guddu Kalia, Aslam, Hazarath Ali, Kamruddin, and Babu Sahan—were apprehended.
Justice Prevails: A Landmark Crackdown
Despite the criminals’ attempts to erase their tracks, forensic techniques helped trace the gold to Tamil Nadu, leading to its recovery from a hidden well. This marked a major win for law enforcement, not only solving a case that had baffled authorities for months but also dismantling a vast criminal web.
The police continue to interrogate the arrested gang members, probing their involvement in other property crimes across Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. This crackdown has struck a significant blow to organized bank robberies in India, reaffirming that no matter how well a crime is planned, the law will always find its way.
