Meet the new AI chatbot Lumo

The firm Proton, which first launched Proton Mail, an encrypted email service, has now debuted an AI chatbot that prioritizes customer privacy. The chatbot, called Lumo, is capable of writing emails, creating code, summarizing documents, and much more. The AI chatbot from Proton has been termed an alternative to ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and other similar programs.

While keeping data locally on users’ devices, the AI chatbot protects user privacy. Several open-source big language models, such as the Allen Institute for AI’s OLMO 2 32B model, Nvidia’s OpenHands 32B, Mistral’s Nemo, and Mistral Small 3, which operate on Proton’s servers in Europe, serve as the foundation for Lumo. Depending on which model is most appropriate for a query, Lumo may process requests using a variety of models.

According to the firm, the new chatbot will utilize “zero-access” encryption, which gives the user an encryption key that gives them exclusive access to their data, to protect information. The corporation will not be revealing any personal information because this encryption key will prevent Proton and other third parties from accessing the user material.

Proton allegedly “asymmetrically” encodes prompts such that only the Lumo GPU servers can decode them and uses Transport Layer Security (TLS) encryption for data transport.

Regarding features, Ghost mode makes sure that your ongoing chat sessions are not stored anywhere, including on local devices. Lumo can expand its existing knowledge by using the Web search tool to find new or recent information online. Although it does not maintain a record of your files, it is also capable of understanding and analyzing them. Last but not least, adding end-to-end encrypted files from your Proton Drive to your Lumo conversations is made easy by integration with Proton Drive.

To protect privacy, the chatbot’s built-in internet search is turned off by default. Lumo will employ privacy-friendly search engines to answer user questions after it is enabled. Although it does not save any of the data, it is capable of analyzing submitted files.

Users may also attach Proton Drive files to Lumo, which are designed to be end-to-end encrypted when interacting with the chatbot. Both a free and a paid version of the chatbot are available. There will be a weekly limit of 25 questions for users without an account with Lumo or Proton. Chat histories won’t be accessible to them. However, those who have a free account are allowed to ask up to 100 queries per week. An extended encrypted chat history, unlimited talks, and other features are included in the $12.99/month Lumo Plus subscription.
