Meet the History-Making Crew of NASA’s Artemis II Moon Mission

NASA has announced the crew for its next mission to the Moon, Artemis II, aiming to launch the first crewed Moon mission in 50 years as early as February 2026. Commander Reid Wiseman said the astronauts would “see things that no human has ever seen,” flying over lunar areas not mapped by previous Apollo missions.

Mission specialist Christina Koch highlighted that the crew would study the lunar surface in detail for three hours. “Believe it or not, human eyes are one of the best scientific instruments that we have,” she said, adding that the crew study on mission could help answer questions about humanity’s place in the universe. Koch will also become the first woman to travel to the Moon.

The crew has named their spacecraft “Integrity,” symbolizing peace and hope for humanity. They draw inspiration from the Apollo missions of the 1960s and 1970s. For Koch, a poster of Earth from Apollo 8 inspired her to become an astronaut, and now she hopes her mission inspires a new generation.

Jeremy Hansen, set to be the first non-American to go to the Moon, said the mission promotes global unity. “The Artemis missions have set such an ambitious goal for humanity…nations around the globe are coming together,” he said. Hansen is a former fighter pilot, physicist, and aquanaut from Canada.

Victor Glover, call sign IKE, will be the first Black astronaut on the Moon. He brings extensive experience from NASA’s SpaceX Crew-1 mission and holds three master’s degrees. Known for his charisma, Glover emphasized, “Pushing ourselves to explore is core to who we are…to understand the big questions about our place in the universe.”

The Artemis II mission is part of NASA’s broader plan to establish a long-term human presence on the Moon and eventually pave the way for Mars exploration. Commander Wiseman hopes this mission will be remembered as a “tiny step in having humans on Mars and a sustained presence on the Moon,” echoing Neil Armstrong’s historic words: “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
