MediaTek to unveil Dimensity 8500 processor in January

A new mobile processor from MediaTek is set to enter the market as the company prepares to expand its Dimensity lineup.

MediaTek announced on Monday that it will launch the Dimensity 8500 chipset later this month. In recent weeks, reports have indicated that the chipmaker has been testing the processor for use in several upcoming smartphones. The new chipset is expected to deliver better performance and efficiency compared to the Dimensity 8400.

According to a post on Weibo by MediaTek, the Dimensity 8500 will be launched in China on January 15 at 3 pm local time, which is 12:30 pm IST. The company has not yet shared official specifications of the processor.

Reports suggest that the Dimensity 8500 will be built using TSMC’s 4 nm process. It is said to feature an octa core design with 1 performance core clocked at 3.40 GHz, 3 mid cores operating at 3.20 GHz, and 4 efficiency cores running at 2.20 GHz.

The chipset is expected to be paired with a Mali G720 MC8 GPU. Leaks claim that it has scored more than 2.2 million points on the AnTuTu benchmark. It is also reported to deliver stronger GPU performance than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 processors.

While the MediaTek processor is yet to be officially launched, reports indicate that it could debut in an upcoming Honor smartphone featuring a 10,000 mAh battery. This device is expected to be called the Honor Power 2. Xiaomi is also reportedly working on the Xiaomi 17T, which may use the same Dimensity 8500 chipset.

The Dimensity 8500 is expected to bring several improvements over the previous Dimensity 8400 processor, which was launched in December 2024. The Dimensity 8400 features 8 Arm Cortex A725 cores with a peak clock speed of 4.32 GHz and includes the Dimensity Agentic AI Engine. MediaTek says this engine can convert traditional AI applications into advanced agentic AI applications.
