Massive alleged cyber breach targets China’s supercomputing centre, exposing sensitive data

In a development that could have major global security implications, a hacker known as “FlamingChina” has claimed to have extracted over 10 petabytes, or 10 million gigabytes, of data from China’s National Supercomputing Center Tianjin (NSCC). The breach, if confirmed, could be one of the largest cyber incidents ever reported.

The leaked data is said to include missile schematics and classified defence documents, raising concerns about national security and technological exposure. The scale of the breach is significant, with 10 petabytes roughly equal to the storage capacity of 10,000 high-end laptops.

Cybersecurity experts who reviewed sample data reportedly found it consistent with outputs typically generated by advanced supercomputing systems. The pricing of the full dataset also reflects its high intelligence value, indicating its potential importance in strategic and defence contexts.

The incident raises serious questions about the cybersecurity strength of the NSCC, especially as the breach appears to have gone undetected for a prolonged period. Given the centre’s wide range of clients, the impact could extend across multiple sectors, including aerospace engineering and military research and development.

The exposed data is believed to include highly sensitive material such as hypersonic technology designs, quantum simulations, and fusion research. These are considered critical assets in the ongoing global competition for technological leadership, particularly amid rising tensions between major powers.

Authorities in China have not yet issued an official response. Meanwhile, speculation around foreign intelligence involvement continues to grow, with calls for international cooperation to identify the source of the breach. Investigations are also expected to examine the possibility of insider involvement.

The breach highlights potential gaps in digital security at a time when countries are investing heavily in AI and supercomputing capabilities. It also raises concerns about the protection of strategic infrastructure linked to technological independence.
