Mantis Space raises $10 million to develop laser-based solar power system for satellites

A space technology startup is working on a new way to power satellites in orbit. Mantis Space, based in New Mexico, has secured $10 million in funding to develop technology that transmits solar power to satellites using lasers.

The investors behind the funding round were not disclosed. The capital will be used to help the company build and test early prototypes of its technology.

Satellites that capture sunlight and beam energy

Instead of relying on traditional batteries or constantly repositioning to stay in sunlight, Mantis Space is designing a constellation of satellites that capture solar energy and send it to other satellites using laser beams. This approach aims to supply energy to satellites that are temporarily in darkness while orbiting the Earth.

According to the company, its military-grade lasers are 20% to 30% more efficient than standard sunlight charging methods currently used by satellites.

Prototype mission planned for 2028

The startup is led by CEO Eric Truitt. The company is targeting 2028 for the launch of its first prototype mission.

In the long term, Mantis Space plans to deploy a satellite constellation capable of delivering power to up to 40 satellites at the same time. The system would allow satellites that are out of direct sunlight to continue operating by receiving energy transmitted from other satellites.

If successful, the technology could provide a new method for maintaining power supply in space missions, especially for satellites that regularly pass through periods without sunlight.
