CHENNAI: Following a woman’s report of losing Rs 1.16 lakh in a digital arrest scam, the Triplicane Cyber Crime Wing police apprehended two individuals linked to the fraud on Saturday.
The police stated that on February 3, Rizwana Begum received a call from someone impersonating a customs officer, who claimed that a parcel containing drugs had been sent in her name. Shortly thereafter, a man in police attire video-called her on WhatsApp, threatening her with immediate digital arrest unless she paid a fine. In a state of panic, she transferred Rs 1.16 lakh, only to later realize she had been deceived. She subsequently reported the incident to the Triplicane police.
After conducting an investigation, a special team along with cybercrime officials arrested T Venkatesh from Kumbakonam and A Mohammed Yunus from Medavakkam. The police confiscated three mobile phones and a laptop from them.
During the investigation, authorities found that Venkatesh operated a manpower agency with an associate who had fled to Cambodia. This associate was allegedly running scams from abroad, impersonating officials and funneling money into Venkatesh’s account.
Both Venkatesh and Yunus had also created a mobile app to facilitate these fraudulent schemes. The primary suspect remains at large, and police are ramping up efforts to locate him. The two arrested individuals were remanded to judicial custody on Sunday.
