Man Tracks Stolen Luggage With AirTag And Finds Thief Wearing His Clothes

A traveller managed to recover his stolen luggage with the help of an Apple AirTag, only to discover the thief wearing his clothes.

Daniel Scott was returning home to Los Angeles from Salt Lake City in August when his suitcase disappeared from baggage claim. After searching several carousels without success, he checked his phone and noticed the AirTag inside his luggage was already moving away from the airport.

Scott rushed to the rideshare lot and took an Uber to follow the AirTag’s signal while his partner alerted airport police. Officers traced the signal to an abandoned building nearby. When they arrived, several people were lined up outside and Scott recognised one of them wearing his clothes. Police detained multiple individuals and Scott was able to retrieve most of his belongings, though his suitcase had been destroyed and his clothes were scattered around the building.

He encouraged other travellers to consider using the device. “It just gave me a fighting chance to find my luggage and retrieve it,” he said.

Apple launched AirTags in 2021 as small coin sized GPS trackers designed to help people locate items such as keys or wallets. Over time they have been used to recover much more, including a stolen car in London and even millions of dollars worth of missing tools in a separate case.

However, the devices have also raised concerns. Some people have misused them for stalking by secretly placing them in bags or pockets. In response, Apple partnered with Google and other Bluetooth tracker companies to send alerts to users if an unknown AirTag appears to be moving with them.

Airlines have also embraced the technology. More than a dozen carriers now allow passengers to share AirTag data to help track down lost luggage faster and improve customer service.
