A cybercrime police team in Azamgarh district has arrested a fraudster who cheated several people of large sums of money by pretending to be a senior education official and offering fake government jobs.
The accused was caught for impersonating the basic education officer of Azamgarh and promising appointment letters for ECCE teacher posts. Police said the accused targeted job seekers and collected money by falsely assuring them of selection. Two mobile phones were seized from him, which contained multiple digital records linked to the fraud.
The cybercrime police identified the accused as Ram Singh. He was arrested on Friday from Kaswa Patti in Pratapgarh district after technical surveillance and mobile location tracking. The operation was led by the cyber police station in charge, inspector Devendra Pratap Singh.
According to SP rural Chirag Jain, Ram Singh is a resident of Prayagraj. He used the name and photo of the basic education officer to gain trust on WhatsApp and Truecaller. He also created a fake email ID [email protected] to appear official while communicating with victims.
Police said the accused demanded money ranging from Rs10,000 to Rs40,000 by sending QR codes linked to public service centres. Once the money was transferred, the victims were blocked and all communication was cut.
A detailed analysis of the seized mobile phones revealed fake email accounts, WhatsApp profiles, lists of ECCE teacher candidates, screenshots of Telegram groups, and other important digital evidence related to the scam.
A case has been registered against the accused at the cybercrime police station in Azamgarh. Officials also confirmed that earlier fraud cases had been registered against him in Amroha district.
The SP rural has appealed to the public to stay alert and avoid paying money if any amount is demanded through email, phone calls, or social media in the name of government jobs or appointments.
