Maharashtra now has access to some of the world’s most advanced technology to fight cyber crime, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Sunday. Speaking at the presentation of the ‘Garuda Drishti’ social media monitoring and cyber intelligence project at Police Bhavan, the Chief Minister highlighted how the system is playing a key role in tracking individuals spreading hatred or inciting violence through social media.
During the event, an amount of Rs 10 crore, recovered from investigations into various cyber financial crimes, was returned to victims. The Chief Minister said that ‘Garuda Drishti’ has been developed to detect and track criminal activities on social media platforms and will be further improved in the future.
While acknowledging the positive role of social media in allowing people to express their views, he pointed out that some anti-social elements misuse it for spreading hatred, issuing threats, hate speech, fake news and even for drug trafficking. “Maharashtra now has access to the world’s best systems and technology to curb such crimes,” he said.
The Chief Minister shared that ‘Garuda Drishti’ has examined 30,000 social media posts so far, identifying 650 offensive posts which were then removed from the concerned platforms. The tool has helped prevent tensions and law and order problems caused by rumours, hateful content and controversial posts. Developed at minimal cost through the Cyber Hack 2025 competition, its Intellectual Property Rights are owned by Nagpur police.
Besides preventing crime, ‘Garuda Drishti’ can also analyse social media trends, identify suspicious accounts and help authorities take swift action. The Chief Minister further noted that most platforms involved in financial fraud are run by foreign entities and urged citizens to stay alert. He warned that offers received on mobile phones are often traps for financial fraud.
“When you realise you have become a victim of financial fraud, contact helpline numbers 1930 and 1945 at the earliest,” he advised.
