In a move aimed at strengthening healthcare services through technology, the Government of Maharashtra has signed a collaboration agreement to introduce artificial intelligence tools across several key public health programmes.
The state government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Wadhwani AI (LEHS AI Unit) to deploy AI technologies in areas such as tuberculosis control, maternal and child health, primary healthcare and e-health services.
The agreement was signed under the guidance of Devendra Fadnavis in the presence of Prakash Abitkar, Minister of Public Health and Family Welfare, on Monday. The partnership aims to improve the state’s healthcare system by integrating AI-based tools that can support diagnosis, treatment monitoring and healthcare delivery across medical facilities.
According to an official statement, the initiative is part of the government’s broader effort to make public health services more technology-driven, efficient and accessible.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said Maharashtra’s digital transformation is entering a new phase where AI will act as a “force multiplier” for public health services. With support from Wadhwani AI, the state plans to build an AI-enabled healthcare system that can deliver quality services to citizens across both urban and rural areas.
A major focus of the initiative is strengthening tuberculosis control using artificial intelligence. AI-based systems will help identify patients who may discontinue treatment, face treatment barriers or develop complications during the treatment process.
The programme will also introduce an application called “Cough Against TB”, which can analyse cough sounds to support early tuberculosis screening at healthcare facilities.
In addition, the initiative will use micro-level vulnerability mapping to identify regions with a higher risk of tuberculosis. Factors such as population density, pollution levels, malnutrition and access to public healthcare services will be analysed to detect vulnerable areas.
This data will help authorities conduct more targeted active case-finding campaigns, improving early detection and treatment efforts across the state.
