Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has instructed the Motor Transport Department to file criminal cases against companies operating app based bike taxi services without complying with state rules. The announcement came after growing concerns about unregulated services and risks to passenger safety.
According to an official statement, the minister noted that despite the recent launch of the state’s new e bike policy, several companies have begun operations without providing proper rider training. It added that many riders are using ordinary private bikes to transport passengers, which is unsafe and violates existing laws. A recent fatal accident involving an illegal bike taxi further intensified the government’s scrutiny.
Sarnaik made it clear that enforcement efforts will target companies rather than individual riders. He stated, “What happens in other states will not be allowed in Maharashtra. The safety of passengers is our top priority. Companies that follow safety rules and do not exploit riders will get government support. But those who operate illegally and put passengers at risk will face strong action.”
Following his directives, the Motor Transport Department, Maharashtra, registered a criminal case on December 2 at a local police station against a ride hailing firm for operating without proper authorisation. The case was filed under Sections 66(1) and 192 of the Motor Vehicles Act for using non transport vehicles as commercial bike taxis, which is prohibited. Additional violations under Section 112 related to speed limits were also included.
During inspections, Mumbai RTO officials booked rides through the company’s app and found multiple riders operating private vehicles for commercial purposes near a busy railway station. Some riders were also found exceeding permitted speed limits.
The minister has reaffirmed that the state will continue its crackdown to ensure compliance with safety norms and protect passengers from illegal and unsafe services.
