Maharashtra Cyber Crime Foils ₹90 Lakh Whale Phishing Scam Targeting Travel Agency

MUMBAI: Quick intervention by Maharashtra Cyber Crime has stopped ₹90 lakh from falling into the hands of cyber fraudsters targeting a travel agency in Bhiwandi. The agency’s accountant became a victim of an elaborate whale phishing scheme on Thursday.

According to police reports, the cybercriminals contacted the accountant through a WhatsApp message, posing as the company’s owner and pressuring him to make an urgent payment of ₹90 lakh for a supposed business project. Misled by this fraudulent communication, the accountant transferred the full amount in one transaction to the scammers. Once the agency realized it had been scammed, they reported the incident on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in). Maharashtra Cyber acted promptly, collaborating with relevant banks and financial institutions to halt the transaction.

Thanks to these rapid and coordinated actions, the ₹90 lakh was successfully frozen, preventing it from reaching the fraudsters. The process to refund the travel agency is currently in progress.

In the past 48 hours, Maharashtra Cyber has effectively addressed five cyber fraud cases, ensuring that a total of ₹1.47 crore involved in these fraudulent transactions was quickly frozen. The office acts as the central agency for cybersecurity and cyber crime enforcement in the state, operating a 24/7 Command and Control Centre staffed by over 100 skilled cyber analysts who manage two dedicated helplines, 1930 and 1945.
