The Maharashtra government has officially initiated plans to develop a new international airport in the Palghar district, which will serve as the third major airport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, alongside the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport in Raigad.
The Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), a state-run organization, has begun conducting a pre-feasibility study for the establishment of a Greenfield airport near the Vadhavan area of Palghar. Vadhavan, located about 140 kilometers from Mumbai on the Maharashtra-Gujarat border, is set to become a key location for infrastructure development.
Vadhavan is already witnessing significant progress with the construction of a Greenfield all-weather port, for which Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone last year. The total cost of the port project, including land acquisition, is approximately Rs 76,220 crore. Vadhavan Port Project Ltd (VPPL), a joint venture between Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), will lead the port’s development. JNPA holds a 74% share, while MMB owns 26%. The project will feature essential infrastructure, terminals, and commercial facilities developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
Additionally, the port will be linked to national highways under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and will have rail connectivity to the existing rail network and the upcoming Dedicated Rail Freight Corridor by the Ministry of Railways. The port will have nine container terminals, each 1,000 meters long, four multipurpose berths, including a Coastal berth, four Liquid Cargo berths, a Ro-Ro berth, and a Coast Guard berth.
The development of an international airport in Vadhavan, alongside the modern port, is poised to be a transformative boost for Maharashtra’s economy. This integrated infrastructure project is set to improve trade, connectivity, and economic opportunities for the region.
