In a major leap for Maharashtra’s business landscape, Unilever’s recently demerged ice cream division—The Magnum Ice Cream Company—is all set to establish its Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Pune. This announcement, made at the India Global Forum, marks a transformative ₹900 crore investment that is expected to generate over 1,000 jobs, as proudly shared by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on his X handle.
“This is a new beginning for Maharashtra to become a GCC hub,” his post read, highlighting the strategic vision to position the state as a global service center magnet.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Maharashtra government and Magnum Ice Cream in the presence of industry and government leaders. Among them were Abhijit Bhattacharya, Global CFO of Magnum Ice Cream; Prashant Premrajka, India CFO; and Toloy Tanridagli, Chief Executive Officer of the brand.
Bhattacharya emphasized the broader vision of empowering skilled professionals across India and abroad, stating that infrastructure strides in Pune have made the region an attractive hotspot for global corporations. “Companies like ours can uplift the careers of skilled talent not only within India but globally as well,” he said, praising the ease of accessibility to Pune owing to improved infrastructure.
Magnum’s decision to build its largest GCC in India signals not just a deepening commitment to the market, but also a bid to grow in a segment where Unilever trails behind dominant players like Amul. Despite housing loved brands like Kwality Walls, Magnum, and Cornetto, the ice cream vertical forms a modest part of Hindustan Unilever Limited’s (HUL) overall business—contributing just 3% of HUL’s ₹58,154 crore revenue in FY23.
Following the global trend of strategic separations, the ice cream business was recently spun off from Unilever. Unlike HUL’s command over home and personal care sectors, the frozen treats business faces stiff competition from both local legends and global giants—including Vadilal, Mother Dairy, Naturals, CreamBell, Havmor, and Baskin Robbins.
This development sets a sweet tone for both Unilever and Maharashtra’s economic growth—blending innovation, job creation, and global vision all into one creamy scoop of progress.
