Abu Dhabi Firm Madari Space Eyes Orbital Data Centers

Madari Space, an Abu Dhabi-based firm, is exploring ambitious plans to build data centers in low Earth orbit (LEO). This pioneering initiative aims to address the escalating demand for digital infrastructure by processing and storing vast amounts of data directly in space.

According to Shareef Al Romaithi, CEO of Madari Space, the move is driven by the exponential growth of data generated both on Earth and in space, particularly from Earth observation satellites. He highlighted that much of this data is currently raw and unprocessed, requiring significant effort to downlink to terrestrial data centers. By placing data centers in space, Madari Space intends to enable real-time processing and storage, allowing data owners to make informed decisions more swiftly.

The company is targeting clients such as satellite operators, space technology firms, governments, and large corporations with substantial data sets that require secure and sustainable storage solutions. A key advantage of orbital data centers is their energy efficiency, as the extremely low temperatures in space can significantly reduce cooling requirements, thereby lowering power consumption.

Madari Space is collaborating closely with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Center and the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs for its first mission, which is tentatively planned for the third quarter of 2026. While currently in the research and development phase, this project underscores the UAE’s broader ambitions in digital transformation and technological advancement. This vision aligns with other major UAE initiatives, such as the Stargate UAE project, a 1GW compute cluster being built by G42 in partnership with OpenAI and Oracle.

This ambitious endeavor by Madari Space reflects a growing global interest in leveraging the unique environment of space for advanced computing, pushing the boundaries of digital infrastructure.
