A new space technology startup is aiming to change how satellites operate in low Earth orbit. Lux Aeterna, founded by former SpaceX engineer Brian Taylor in late 2024, has secured $10 million in seed funding.
The funding round was led by Konvoy, with participation from several other investors. Before this round, the company had already raised $4 million in pre-seed funding.
Lux Aeterna is working to make satellite operations more efficient. The startup is developing what it describes as the world’s first fully reusable satellite bus designed for low Earth orbit.
The system uses heat shield technology similar to designs developed by NASA. These satellites are built to survive atmospheric re-entry, allowing them to be recovered, refurbished, and redeployed. The concept could enable repeated use of the same satellite platform for multiple missions.
Lux Aeterna compares its approach to a “space Uber” for scientific research, defence technology demonstrations, hypersonic testing, and space manufacturing experiments.
Operations are currently based in a 6,000-square-foot facility in Denver.
Lux Aeterna is developing a reusable satellite platform called Delphi. These satellites are designed so that payloads can be recovered without losing the entire satellite after each mission.
The first Delphi return mission is planned for 2027 at the Koonibba Test Range in Australia. A second Delphi return is also planned, although the timeline has not been specified. Launch vehicles and detailed schedules for both planned returns have not yet been confirmed.
If the technology works as expected, reusable satellites could significantly improve the efficiency of space missions while reducing waste in satellite operations.
