L&T secures major contract for LIGO-India observatory project in Maharashtra

In a move that marks a significant milestone for India’s scientific infrastructure, a major engineering firm has been selected for a key role in an advanced global research initiative.

Larsen & Toubro has won a contract worth up to ₹2,500 crore to support the construction of the LIGO-India Observatory in Maharashtra. The project is expected to strengthen India’s presence in global gravitational wave research.

Under the contract, L&T will be responsible for the complete design and construction of the observatory facility. This includes developing highly sensitive scientific infrastructure and manufacturing and installing an 8 km-long vacuum beam tube, a critical component of the observatory.

The company will also execute the installation of core systems such as mechanical, electrical, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and fire safety. These systems are essential to maintain the precision environment required for gravitational wave detection. The entire project is expected to be completed within a period of about 4 years.

The LIGO-India Observatory is considered a landmark science project and is aimed at placing India among leading nations involved in gravitational wave studies. The facility will contribute to international research efforts by improving the global network used to detect and study gravitational waves.

This contract win highlights L&T’s expertise in executing complex and high-precision scientific projects. It is also expected to enhance India’s research ecosystem and reinforce the country’s role in the global scientific community focused on advanced space and physics research.
