Engineering major Larsen and Toubro has received a supply order from the Indian Army’s Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers, the company said in an exchange filing.
The order covers the overhaul, upgrade, and long term maintenance of the indigenous Pinaka Multi Rocket Launcher Systems. The partnership is aimed at supporting frontline artillery systems that are already deployed with the Indian Army. Financial details of the order were not disclosed.
As part of the programme, outdated components will be replaced, key sub systems will be upgraded, and long term technical support will be provided to Army Base Workshops. The objective is to keep the Pinaka systems operational, reliable, and modern over the coming years.
Under the arrangement, the 510 Army Base Workshop of the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers will carry out the overhaul and upgrade of critical electronic systems using its in house technical expertise. Larsen and Toubro, as the original equipment manufacturer, will supply critical spare parts and support the modernisation of major sub systems. This approach is expected to shift maintenance from routine repairs to a planned lifecycle based model.
In the first phase, Larsen and Toubro and 510 Army Base Workshop will jointly conduct a pilot overhaul of a Pinaka launcher and a Battery Command Post. After successful completion of the pilot, the remaining systems will be upgraded by 510 Army Base Workshop with continued technical support from Larsen and Toubro.
The Pinaka system, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, is India’s indigenous multi barrel rocket launcher. Named after Lord Shiva’s bow, it is known for delivering rapid and high volume fire against area targets. Advanced variants of the system offer ranges of up to 120 km along with guided capabilities for precision strikes.
The partnership is seen as strengthening the public private collaboration model in defence maintenance. It is expected to serve as a reference for similar upgrade and lifecycle management programmes across other defence platforms.
Larsen and Toubro said the initiative is a significant step in lifecycle support for India made artillery systems. The company has been a long time partner of the Defence Research and Development Organisation and the Indian Army in the development and supply of the Pinaka system, and noted that the collaboration reflects closer coordination between the Army and Indian industry.
