Krutrim, the artificial intelligence (AI) firm founded by Ola’s Bhavish Aggarwal, has reportedly laid off over 100 employees, a significant portion of its linguistics team. These job cuts come less than six months after the affected employees were recruited, marking the second wave of reductions following an initial round in June that eliminated more than a dozen positions.
The layoffs are attributed to a shift in the Krutrim’s organizational priorities, driven by external circumstances. These factors include delays in fundraising and insufficient traction for Krutrim’s products in the market. The company has stated that this adjustment is in line with evolving business needs and reflects its long-term objective of building a comprehensive AI platform specifically for India.
This development highlights the volatile nature of the AI startup landscape, where rapid growth and ambitious goals can be quickly followed by restructuring in response to market realities and funding challenges. Krutrim’s focus on creating an indigenous AI platform for India remains, but the recent workforce adjustments suggest a recalibration of its operational strategy to achieve that vision.
