In a major step to strengthen cyber safety, Kolkata Police has launched a round-the-clock cybercrime helpline to support citizens facing online threats and fraud.
The toll-free number 1800-3450066 will operate 24×7 for residents under the jurisdiction of Kolkata Police. The helpline will assist citizens with queries related to cybercrime and guide them on the steps to take if they become victims of cyber fraud. It also aims to help people understand the procedures to follow after such incidents.
The helpline was inaugurated by Kolkata Police Commissioner Supratim Sarkar at the Cyber Police Station located inside the police headquarters at Lalbazar.
Highlighting the urgency in cybercrime cases, Sarkar stressed the importance of the golden hour. He said the first hour after a crime is critical, as fraudsters are most active during this period and money is quickly transferred from one account to another.
Kolkata Police currently receives around 1000–1200 cybercrime complaints every month. About 80 per cent of these cases involve financial fraud, while the remaining 20 per cent relate to impersonation or social media abuse.
So far, the police have managed to recover nearly 25 per cent of the money lost by residents in cyber fraud cases.
Alongside the helpline, Kolkata Police has also introduced a Specialised Blocking Cell. This unit will monitor and track phone numbers, SIM cards, APK files, IP addresses and URLs used in cybercrimes. Once identified, these resources will be blocked to prevent further misuse and stop additional crimes.
The cybercrime unit has also launched a newsletter titled Cyber Pass. The publication aims to spread awareness about cyber threats and promote safe online practices among citizens.
