Kim Jong Un has supervised his country’s testing of new AI-equipped suicide drones

Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, has personally overseen the testing of new AI-enabled suicide and reconnaissance drones in his nation and demanded that plans for military modernization give priority to unmanned aircraft and artificial intelligence.

Kim observed the testing of “various kinds of reconnaissance and suicide drones” made by North Korea’s Unmanned Aerial Technology Complex, according to a statement released Thursday by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

According to KCNA, the attack drones will “be used for various tactical attack missions,” while the new North Korean drones can “tracking and monitoring different strategic targets and enemy troop activities on the ground and the sea.” Both drone systems have been outfitted with “new artificial intelligence.”

Kim agreed to expand the production capacity of “unmanned equipment and artificial intelligence” and emphasised the importance of creating a long-term plan for North Korea to promote “the rapid development” of “intelligent drones”, which is “the trend of modern warfare”.

According to images issued by KCNA, Kim was seen boarding an airborne early warning and control (AEW) aircraft and strolling with advisers next to a recently constructed unmanned aerial surveillance aircraft that looked larger than a fighter jet.

The photographs are the first time the North has displayed such an aircraft, which has a radar dome on the fuselage like the South Korean air force’s Boeing-built Peace Eye.

Analysts who had previously utilized commercial satellite images to find Pyongyang was converting a Russian-made Il-76 freight aircraft into an early-warning role had reported on North Korea’s efforts to develop an early warning aircraft.

In a research last year, the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) stated that while one AEW aircraft would not be sufficient, it would assist supplement North Korea’s current land-based radar capabilities.

Kim was also briefed on intelligence-gathering capabilities and new electronic assault and jammer devices created by the nation’s electronic warfare group during his visit to the test site, according to KCNA.
