A 40-year-old woman from Mangaluru, Karnataka, has fallen victim to a sophisticated “digital arrest” scam, losing over ₹3.16 crore to fraudsters impersonating law enforcement officials. The elaborate scheme involved manipulating the victim into transferring a substantial sum of money under the guise of a “verification process.”
The scam began on June 6 when the woman received a phone call from an individual claiming to be from the National Crime Reporting Portal. Woman was falsely accused of misusing a SIM card registered in her husband’s name. The call was then purportedly escalated to other individuals who posed as a public prosecutor, further intimidating the victim.
Over several days, from June 10 to June 27, the fraudsters coerced her into sharing personal and financial details. Believing the money was part of a legitimate verification process and would be returned, she transferred over ₹3.16 crore. The woman only realized she had been defrauded after discussing the incident with her children.
A case has been registered, and an investigation is currently underway. Police have noted a rise in similar “digital arrest” scams, including a recent case in Hyderabad, and have issued a public advisory urging extreme caution against unknown callers who claim to represent government or law enforcement agencies.
