Karnataka is set to elevate India’s space ambitions with the launch of the country’s first Centre of Excellence (CoE) in space technology in Bengaluru. The initiative, undertaken in partnership with the Space Industry Association India (SIA-India), aims to create a multi-functional platform that brings together industry, academia, startups, and government bodies to accelerate innovation in the space sector. The collaboration will follow a five-year roadmap from 2025 to 2030, formalised through a Memorandum of Agreement between the Karnataka Innovation and Technology Society and SIA-India.
Priyank M Kharge, Karnataka’s Minister for Electronics, IT, and Biotechnology, highlighted the state’s unique advantage in driving this mission. He noted that Karnataka, home to institutions such as ISRO, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), DRDO, and several public sector undertakings under the Ministry of Defence, has long been at the heart of India’s innovation ecosystem. Supported by a thriving network of startups, technology companies, and skilled professionals, the state is ideally positioned to advance India’s aerospace, defence, and emerging technology capabilities while supporting the nation’s New Space aspirations.
Subba Rao Pavuluri, President of SIA-India, described the new Centre as a “strategic nucleus” that will strengthen Karnataka’s leadership in the global space economy. He said the CoE will leverage the combined strengths of academia, industry, and government to usher in a new era of innovation, collaboration, and global competitiveness in India’s space journey.
The CoE will act as a key hub for incubating and accelerating space technology startups, funding prototype development, upskilling professionals, certifying students, and advancing R&D in areas such as satellite components, data analytics, and AI-driven tools.
Anil Prakash, Director General of SIA-India, added that the initiative will link innovators with ISRO and IN-SPACe resources, support research in satellite manufacturing and launch systems, and introduce India’s first State Space Innovation Index. This effort will position Karnataka as the launchpad for the next generation of Indian space enterprises.
