Karnataka reports Rs 5,474 crore cyber fraud losses in three years

Karnataka has recorded massive financial losses linked to cyber fraud, with Rs 5,474 crore lost over the last three years. Home Minister G Parameshwara shared the figures in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday while responding to a question on the growing threat of cybercrime.

Official data placed before the House showed that the state registered 22,255 cybercrime cases in 2023. This increased slightly to 22,478 cases in 2024, while 13,000 cases have been reported so far in 2025.

However, the data also reveals a steady fall in detection rates. In 2023, agencies solved 6,159 cases. This dropped to 3,549 in 2024 and stands at only 1,009 cases in 2025 to date.

Financial losses have grown sharply during the same period. Cyber fraudsters stole Rs 873.29 crore in 2023. Losses surged to Rs 2,562.63 crore in 2024 and reached Rs 2,038.84 crore this year. Together, these figures push the total losses to Rs 5,474.76 crore.

The Home Minister said several factors are driving the rise in cyber fraud. The rapid growth in internet users across the state has increased the number of potential victims. Low levels of digital awareness continue to expose citizens to online scams.

Fraudsters are also using tools such as VPNs, encrypted messaging platforms, and dark web services to avoid detection. The swift expansion of digital payment systems has created new opportunities for criminals to exploit.

The report added that socio economic challenges, including unemployment, poverty, urban stress, higher exposure to social media, and weakening moral values, have contributed to the rising number of offences.

The government acknowledged additional structural issues such as limited law enforcement capacity in cybercrime handling and long judicial delays, both of which are affecting effective action and conviction.
