In a strong signal of its ambition to lead India’s frontier technology push, Karnataka has announced plans to host the country’s first commercial quantum computer at Indian Institute of Information Technology Dharwad.
The announcement was made by Priyank Kharge, who said the move marks a major milestone in positioning the state as a national hub for advanced quantum technologies and deeptech research. The deployment is part of Karnataka’s broader strategy to build a globally competitive ecosystem around next-generation computing and innovation.
“Karnataka is moving decisively in the quantum space. The deployment of India’s first commercial quantum computer at the Indian Institute of Information Technology-Dharwad marks a significant milestone in building a world-class quantum ecosystem,” the minister said.
The announcement followed a series of meetings with Bengaluru-based deeptech firm QpiAI and Singapore-based water technology company ZWEEC, focusing on advanced computing and infrastructure-led innovation.
During discussions with QpiAI, the minister reviewed plans to deploy what is being described as the country’s first indigenously built commercial quantum computer at IIIT-Dharwad. The state has also announced the establishment of a Centre of Excellence in Quantum AI and Computing at the institute to support research, talent development, and industry collaboration.
QpiAI shared its roadmap to scale its quantum systems from 25 qubits to a 1,000-qubit quantum computer within the next 2 to 3 years, highlighting the rapid pace of development planned in the sector.
In a separate meeting, ZWEEC showcased its biomonitoring technologies designed for early detection of drinking water contamination and algal blooms. Priyank Kharge said the state government would examine the feasibility of piloting this solution in partnership with the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Department, especially for rural and semi-urban applications.
With these initiatives, Karnataka is reinforcing its focus on deeptech, combining quantum computing, applied research, and real-world infrastructure solutions to attract next-generation talent and position the state at the forefront of emerging technologies.
