Karnataka forms a Cyber Command Unit to coordinate digital investigations

The Karnataka government has authorized the establishment of a specialized Cyber Command Unit, which is a major step in improving cybersecurity and tackling the rising number of digital offenses. The goal of the new program is to coordinate state-wide efforts to prevent and look into crimes involving technology.

An official government order dated April 9, 2025, granted the approval. The directive states that a newly created Director General of Cyber Command will lead the Cyber Command Unit, which would report to the Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department. In order to avoid adding to the state exchequer’s financial burden, the administration has made it clear that the unit would be founded without the creation of any new positions or infrastructure.

The Director General and Inspector General of Police provided alarming data that showed Karnataka had over 52,000 cybercrime cases in the previous four years, prompting the decision. According to reports, these incidents account for over 20% of all crimes committed in metropolitan areas, with digital crimes increasingly outnumbering traditional offenses like robbery and dacoity.

In addition to two specialized cybercrime police stations in Bengaluru and other locations, the newly established Cyber Crimes Prevention Unit would combine the activities of all 43 CEN (Cyber, Economics, and Narcotics) police stations in the state. The Cyber Command Unit will now oversee 45 police stations in total, each of which will be responsible for dealing with different types of cybercrime and associated offenses.

The Information Technology Act, 2000; pertinent sections of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to financial fraud (such as Sections 420, 409, 467, and 468); the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967; the Karnataka Control of Organised Crime Act, 2000; the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Act, 2019; and laws governing financial offences and human trafficking are just a few of the legal provisions that will authorize these police stations to operate.

The Director General of Cyber Command will be the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) in accordance with the Karnataka Cyber Security Policy-2023, in addition to their police duties. On interdepartmental coordination committees aimed at combating disinformation and more general cyberthreats, the officer will also speak on behalf of the unit.

By creating this organization, the Karnataka government intends to show a unified and aggressive face against the quickly changing cybercrime scene, improving safety for both digital infrastructure and citizens.
