Karnataka announces KEO, an affordable AI ready computer designed to close the digital gap

The Karnataka government announced KEO on 17 November. KEO is a compact and affordable AI ready personal computer that has been fully designed and developed in Karnataka. It aims to bridge the digital access gap across the state.

KEO stands for Knowledge driven, Economical, Open source. It has been created to offer an accessible computing option for people across Karnataka. The device is built on an open source RISC V processor and uses a Linux based operating system. It provides a complete computing experience at a low cost. KEO includes 4G, Wi Fi, Ethernet, USB A and USB C ports, HDMI, and an audio jack. It also comes preloaded with learning, programming and productivity tools.

The device includes an on device AI core. This allows artificial intelligence to run locally without internet access. KEO is also preloaded with BUDDH. BUDDH is an AI agent trained on the Karnataka DSERT syllabus to help students even in areas with low connectivity.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will officially unveil KEO on 18 November during the inaugural ceremony of the Bengaluru Tech Summit. After the launch, KEO will be displayed throughout the Summit. Students, startups, industry leaders and visitors will be able to use the device and understand how it supports affordable and AI ready computing across Karnataka.

Priyank Kharge, Minister for Electronics, IT and BT, said, “KEO is Karnataka’s practical answer to the digital divide. It is not a luxury device; it is an inclusion device. Affordable mass computing will allow every student, every small business, and every household to participate fully in the digital economy.” Sharath Kumar Bache Gowda, Chairman of KEONICS, added, “KEONICS is leaning into its legacy and mission of driving electronics innovation. By adopting an open source RISC V stack, KEO strengthens Karnataka’s commitment to accessible, locally adaptable, home grown computing solutions.”

KEO will be deployed across schools, universities, small businesses, government offices and homes. It will support digital learning, skilling and entrepreneurship. It also forms an important part of Karnataka’s plan to drive decentralised technology growth across all districts and ensure equal digital opportunity for every citizen.
