Kanpur Real Estate Company Loses ₹1.97 Crore in Cyber Fraud

A prominent real estate and trading company based in Kanpur has fallen victim to a sophisticated cyber fraud, losing a substantial sum of ₹1.97 crore. The incident highlights the growing threat of digital impersonation and financial scams targeting businesses.

According to reports, fraudsters created a fake WhatsApp account using the photograph of the company’s managing director. They then used this deceptive profile to communicate with a company director, instructing them to transfer funds.

Believing the instructions to be legitimate, the company director proceeded to transfer ₹1.97 crore to a Kolkata-based pharmaceutical firm. However, before the fraud was fully uncovered, ₹69 lakh of the transferred amount had already been disbursed across multiple transactions, making recovery challenging.

Upon realizing the deception, the company promptly reported the incident to the Cyber Crime police in Kanpur. Investigations are currently underway to trace the perpetrators, understand the full extent of the fraud, and recover the lost funds.

This case serves as a stark reminder for businesses to implement robust internal verification protocols for financial transactions and to remain vigilant against phishing attempts and impersonation scams, especially those leveraging popular communication platforms like WhatsApp.
