Reliance Jio is reportedly offering free incoming SMS support over Wi-Fi calling (VoWiFi) for users travelling internationally. The feature allows customers to receive important messages without needing an active international roaming (IR) pack.
As per reports, users can receive incoming SMS at no additional cost as long as their device is connected to a Wi-Fi network and Wi-Fi calling is enabled. The service is said to function independently of international roaming plans, helping users avoid extra charges typically associated with receiving messages abroad.
This feature is expected to be particularly useful for receiving time-sensitive messages such as one-time passwords, banking alerts, transactional updates, and service verification messages. These are essential for logging into accounts, completing transactions, and accessing secure services while overseas.
The service does not rely on foreign SIM cards or partner roaming networks. Instead, SMS messages are routed securely over the connected Wi-Fi network, ensuring reliability and privacy.
To use this feature, users need to connect their smartphone to a Wi-Fi network and enable Wi-Fi calling in device settings. No additional activation is required from the telecom provider. Once enabled, incoming SMS messages will be delivered through the Wi-Fi connection.
However, users must have an active domestic base recharge plan from Jio, a smartphone that supports Wi-Fi calling, and access to a stable internet connection, such as at hotels, airports, cafes, or office networks.
This move aims to help international travellers stay connected without incurring extra costs, especially for critical communications.
