Japanese telecom leader NTT Communications Corporation (NTT) has alerted nearly 18,000 corporate clients following a cyberattack that compromised sensitive customer information. The breach, identified in early February 2025, affected the company’s Order Information Distribution System, which holds contract details for 17,891 corporate customers.
Breach Details
NTT detected unauthorized access to its systems on February 5 and confirmed the possibility of data leakage by February 6. The compromised database included:
- Customer name (registered contract name)
- Representative’s name
- Contract number
- Phone number
- Email address
- Physical address
- Service usage information
Importantly, contracts related to corporate smartphones and mobile services from NTT Docomo were not impacted.
NTT successfully blocked the hacker’s access by February 6. However, on February 15, investigators found that the attackers had infiltrated another network device. This secondary breach was quickly contained by disconnecting the affected device, and NTT now believes the threat has been fully addressed.
Unlike many companies that provide personalized notifications, NTT opted for a public announcement on its website as the sole means of informing affected customers.
This incident is not NTT’s first significant cybersecurity challenge. On January 2, 2025, a major 12-hour DDoS attack disrupted the company’s mobile services and payment systems. Additionally, in May 2020, hackers breached NTT’s internal network, compromising sensitive data from numerous customers.
As one of Japan’s largest telecom providers, NTT continues to be a target for cybercriminals. The company is now focused on strengthening its security protocols to prevent future breaches in its corporate infrastructure.
