A Japanese engineering company has unveiled an ambitious concept that could transform how the world produces clean energy. The idea involves building a massive solar-panel belt around the Moon to capture continuous sunlight and transmit the power back to Earth.
Shimizu Corporation has proposed constructing an 11,000-km-long solar-panel ring along the Moon’s equator. The project aims to harvest uninterrupted solar energy from space and convert it into usable electricity for Earth, potentially creating a new source of renewable power.
According to the concept, robots would play a central role in building the structure. They would process lunar soil to create concrete, enabling the construction of infrastructure directly on the Moon. In the Moon’s low-gravity environment, inflatable structures could also be deployed to support the development of the enormous solar belt.
Once operational, the solar panels would collect energy from constant sunlight. That energy would then be converted into laser or microwave signals and transmitted to receiving stations on Earth. These ground stations would convert the signals back into electricity, effectively turning the Moon into a massive space-based power plant.
The proposal is designed to address the world’s growing demand for sustainable energy while reducing the pressure on Earth’s natural resources. By generating power beyond our planet, the project envisions a future where clean energy can be delivered continuously from space.
With decades of engineering expertise, the Japanese company is presenting a bold vision of robots working across the lunar surface and circling the Moon to generate power for Earth. The concept reflects how large-scale space infrastructure could one day play a role in meeting global energy needs.
