Japanese E10 Bullet Trains to Operate on Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Corridor

India is set to use the latest Japanese E10 Shinkansen bullet trains on the upcoming Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor. According to senior officials, the country will first conduct trials with the existing E5 model before launching full-scale commercial operations with the more advanced E10 variant.

The 508 km corridor, with 352 km in Gujarat and 156 km in Maharashtra, is being developed using Japanese Shinkansen technology. This high-speed route is expected to set new benchmarks in speed, safety and reliability for rail travel in India.

Currently, the E5 variant is in service in Japan, but the new E10 models are under development. These next-generation trains will be introduced simultaneously in both Japan and India around 2030. “The newest Japanese trains will run on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed corridor,” a senior official confirmed.

In a recent statement, it was noted that the Japanese government has agreed to introduce the E10 Shinkansen trains in India as part of the ongoing strategic partnership between the two countries.

As of now, 310 km of the corridor’s viaduct construction has been completed. Trial runs of the bullet train are expected in 2026, with commercial operations planned for 2027.

While the Railway Board initially depended entirely on Japanese technology for the bullet train project, India is now exploring the inclusion of more domestic expertise. A full signalling and telecommunication system contract has recently been awarded to vendors using European technology in collaboration with Indian companies.

At the same time, discussions continue with Japanese firms regarding the supply of Shinkansen trainsets. The trials with E5 trains will help assess their performance and determine any changes required for the upcoming E10 models.

Additionally, the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) has been assigned to develop a high-speed train capable of running at speeds of up to 280 kmph. ICF is working in partnership with defence sector enterprise BEML to produce these trains locally.
