James Warburton Returns to Steer Supercars as Chief Executive Officer Once Again

Wishing Mr. James Warburton greater responsibilities and exciting challenges in this impressive new chapter!

Supercars is thrilled to announce the return of James Warburton as its new Chief Executive Officer, officially stepping into the role on 23 July 2025.

Having previously led the organisation between 2013 and 2017, Warburton is no stranger to the adrenaline-charged world of Supercars. His earlier tenure was marked by impressive commercial progress and greater financial assurance for racing teams. Under his leadership, the sport witnessed landmark achievements, including a transformative six-year media rights deal with a prominent Australian broadcaster, which elevated both visibility and economic strength.

A visionary leader with deep roots in sport, media, and major events, Warburton is praised for his ability to deliver results and cultivate trusted partnerships across the board — from sponsors and teams to fans and broadcasters.

Chairman Barclay Nettlefold expressed full confidence, saying, “James is an energetic, strategic and results-driven executive. He understands the DNA of our sport and has a proven track record of delivering commercial success and building trusted relationships with teams, partners, broadcasters and fans alike. His return reflects our ambition to strengthen Supercars’ position as a world-class sporting and entertainment product.”

Since his last lap with Supercars, Warburton has remained in the fast lane of executive leadership. He successfully led APN Outdoor through a major transformation and sale and later took the reins at a leading national media company, where he accelerated digital innovation and spearheaded streaming and broadcasting milestones.

Reflecting on his return, Warburton shared, “Supercars holds a very special place in Australian sport, and I’m honoured to be returning to lead the business into its next phase.” He added, “This is a Championship with passionate fans, incredible on-track action, and huge potential to grow. The business has evolved significantly in recent years and I’m excited to build on the strong foundation already in place.”

His appointment comes as Shane Howard transitions into the position of Director – Motorsport and Board Director at the organisation’s parent company. The Board has extended its sincere gratitude to Howard for his leadership and looks forward to his ongoing role in shaping the sport.

With Warburton back at the helm, Supercars looks poised to shift into a higher gear.
