In this role he will guide HR strategy, strengthen organisational capability and support a culture that aligns with the museum’s mission to advance Asian and Asian American art and culture. His work will help shape people practices that support the institution’s evolving vision and its growing engagement with global audiences.
Before joining the museum, Jacob Smith Yang spent six years as Director of Human Resources and Administration at Asian Americans Advancing Justice Asian Law Caucus. He led people operations, HR systems and organisational development within one of the country’s most prominent civil rights organisations. His leadership helped enhance workplace culture, improve operational efficiency and strengthen employee experience in a mission driven setting.
Prior to this, Jacob served nearly seven years as Senior Director of Capacity Building at Capacity for Health. He designed and delivered training, technical assistance and organisational capability programs that supported the Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Forum. His efforts helped community health organisations build stronger advocacy, develop systems support and expand their impact.
Earlier in his career Jacob spent a decade as Executive Director at MAP for Health, a nonprofit focused on fairness, inclusion and health access for Asian American and Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander communities. In this role Jacob oversaw strategic planning, fundraising, public health initiatives, policy advocacy and coalition building across multiple states. He also served as the organisation’s public spokesperson.
Jacob’s professional foundation includes work across several influential organisations such as Interaction Institute for Social Change, AIDS Action Committee, Boston AIDS Consortium, GLBTQ Legal Advocates and Defenders, JRI America and Gay Community News. Across these roles he contributed to organisational development, public policy, legal advocacy, community health work, training, grassroots mobilisation and media engagement. These experiences shaped a career grounded in equity, community empowerment and social impact.
