An Italian court has cut a 1.13 billion euro fine imposed on Amazon in 2021 by the country’s competition authority, following an appeal by the company. The Lazio administrative court upheld the regulator’s findings that Amazon abused its dominant position in the e-commerce logistics market but ruled that the penalty had to be recalculated.
The judges said the authority had not justified the decision to apply a discretionary 50 percent increase to the fine. While the ruling did not specify the new amount, removing the surcharge would reduce the penalty to about 750 million euros, according to calculations.
Amazon was originally fined for allegedly restricting competition by favouring its own logistics services over those of rivals in Italy. At the time, the penalty was one of the largest handed down to a US technology company in Europe.
In response, Amazon said, “We will continue to defend our position on the case. More than half of all annual sales on Amazon in Italy come from small and medium businesses (SMBs). We have 20,000 Italian SMBs that sell on Amazon, including sellers that manage shipment themselves, and we constantly invest to support their growth.”
