The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will launch Vyommitra, an artificial intelligence-enabled half-humanoid robot, as part of the uncrewed test flight of the Gaganyaan Spaceflight Mission, ISRO Chairman V Narayanan announced on Thursday.
Vyommitra will be the first half-humanoid to fly aboard an Indian space mission. The launch is scheduled for the end of December this year and will serve as a crucial step in the preparation for sending Indian astronauts into space.
The Gaganyaan Mission aims to carry humans into orbit at an altitude of 400 kilometres for a three-day mission and return them safely to Earth.
“Work is going on. We have planned to send the unmanned spacecraft this December-end,” Narayanan told reporters.
He explained that several technical challenges, including regulating temperature, pressure, humidity, and carbon dioxide levels inside the spacecraft, need to be addressed to ensure mission success.
Narayanan also confirmed that a safety escape system has been designed for the spacecraft. In case of emergencies, this system will ensure the crew’s safety during launch and flight. He further added that nine parachutes have been included in the design to enable the spacecraft to make a safe splashdown in the sea at the end of the mission.
The launch of Vyommitra half-humanoid marks a significant milestone for India’s space programme, as it will simulate crew activities and test the conditions required to sustain human life in space before the crewed mission is undertaken.
