ISRO Marks Major Milestone in Samudrayaan with First Weld of Deep-Sea Crew Sphere

India’s Deep Ocean Mission has reached a key engineering milestone. ISRO, in partnership with the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), has completed the first high‑penetration weld on the titanium personnel sphere for the MATSYA 6000 submersible under the Samudrayaan programme.

The personnel sphere measures 2.26 metres in diameter and features an 80 mm thick titanium alloy wall. It is engineered to withstand extreme pressures of up to 600 bar and temperatures down to −3 °C, safely carrying a three-member crew to depths of six kilometres.

ISRO’s Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre in Bengaluru upgraded its electron beam welding system from 15 kW to 40 kW. Nearly 700 weld trials were conducted to refine the process. The final weld spanned 7.1 metres of sphere over 32 minutes—an Indian first in terms of scale and precision.

For quality assurance, ISRO enhanced its X‑ray radiography capability to a high‑energy 7.5 MeV range. Advanced non‑destructive evaluation methods including Time of Flight Diffraction and Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing were employed. Third-party agencies are now validating the welding procedures and certification protocols.

This success positions India among a small group of nations capable of building human-rated deep-sea habitats. With the personnel sphere now complete, the MATSYA 6000 submersible moves closer to sea trials. The mission is expected to open new frontiers in marine research, resource exploration, and underwater technology.
