In a cosmic leap toward India’s human spaceflight ambitions, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has christened 2025 as the “Gaganyaan Year”, marking a significant stride in its bold journey beyond Earth’s boundaries. The prestigious Gaganyaan Programme, first sanctioned in December 2018, aims to send humans into Low Earth Orbit and establish vital technologies for India’s long-term presence in space.
Speaking at a recent event in Kolkata, ISRO’s top official V Narayanan revealed that over 7200 tests have already been accomplished as part of this grand mission, with around 3000 more still in the pipeline. “This year is a very important year for us. We have declared it Gaganyaan year. Before sending the humans, we have planned three uncrewed missions and the first uncrewed mission is planned this year… Till date, more than 7200 tests have been completed and about 3000 tests are pending, work is going on 24 hours,” he said.
Among the milestones celebrated was the successful completion of the SpaDeX mission, which showcased space docking capabilities using minimal fuel. “Today, we are happy to report that the SpaDeX mission has been successfully completed. We accounted ten kilos of fuel to do this mission, but we did it with only half the fuel and the rest of the fuel is available,” Narayanan shared joyfully, underlining ISRO’s efficiency.
He also highlighted an exciting roadmap ahead. ISRO is gearing up for several launches in 2025, including a NASA collaboration on a synthetic aperture radar satellite, as well as commercial missions and new communication satellites developed in India.
Looking toward the skies with hope, ISRO’s Narayanan outlined the upcoming stages: the maiden uncrewed flight featuring the humanoid robot ‘Vyommitra’ is set for December 2025, followed by two more test missions. The ultimate target is India’s first human spaceflight by early 2027.
With launches lined up almost every month, ISRO’s journey into human space exploration is gathering momentum, lighting up the sky with promise and purpose.
