ISRO begins countdown for first PSLV mission of 2026 carrying 14 satellites

Signalling the start of its launch calendar for the year, the Indian Space Research Organisation has begun the countdown for a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) mission that will place 14 satellites into orbit, serving both Indian and international customers.

The 22.5-hour countdown commenced at 12Indian Space Research Organisation.48 pm on Sunday and will culminate in the launch of the PSLV-C62 rocket. The mission marks ISRO’s first satellite launch of the year. The rocket is scheduled to lift off at 10.18 am on January 12, revised by 1 minute from the earlier planned time of 10.17 am.

The PSLV-C62 has a lift-off mass of nearly 260 tonnes and will carry a total of 14 satellites. These include 1 earth observation satellite and 13 co-passenger satellites belonging to domestic and overseas customers.

As part of the PSLV-C62/EOS-N1 mission, the earth observation satellite, built by entities from Thailand and the United Kingdom, will be deployed first. Around 17 minutes after lift-off, the remaining 13 co-passenger satellites will be placed into a sun-synchronous orbit around the Earth.

The mission is being undertaken by NewSpace India Limited, which manages ISRO’s commercial launch activities and satellite deployment services.

The PSLV remains one of ISRO’s most reliable launch vehicles. To date, the rocket has completed 63 missions, including landmark flights such as Chandrayaan-1, the Mars Orbiter Mission, and the Aditya-L1 solar mission.

The previous PSLV launch was the C61 mission, which carried the Earth Observation Satellite 09 on May 18, 2025. That mission could not be completed after an “observation” was detected in the third stage of the rocket, leading to its termination.

With the PSLV-C62 mission, ISRO aims to resume its launch momentum while continuing to support global satellite customers through its proven launch platform.
