ISRO Completes First Air Drop Test For Gaganyaan Mission Ahead Of December Flight

The Indian Space Research Organisation has successfully carried out its first Integrated Air Drop Test for the parachute based deceleration system of the Gaganyaan mission. The achievement marks an important step in ensuring astronaut safety during their return to Earth.

According to ISRO, the demonstration was conducted in partnership with the Indian Air Force, Defence Research and Development Organisation, Indian Navy, and Indian Coast Guard. In a post on X, the agency said, “ISRO successfully accomplishes first Integrated Air Drop Test (IADT 01) for end to end demonstration of parachute based deceleration system for Gaganyaan missions. This test is a joint effort of ISRO, Indian Air Force, DRDO, Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard.”

ISRO chairman V Narayanan confirmed that the first uncrewed Gaganyaan mission, G1, will lift off in December carrying the half humanoid robot Vyommitra. Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, Narayanan said the programme is progressing strongly, with nearly seven thousand seven hundred tests already completed out of a total of around ten thousand. He added that the remaining two thousand three hundred tests should be finished by March next year.

Earlier, the minister of state for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh said development and ground testing of the Human Rated Launch Vehicle for the Gaganyaan mission had been completed. In a statement in the Lok Sabha, he explained that propulsion systems for the Crew Module and Service Module had been developed and tested, while the engineering model of the Environmental Control and Life Support System was realised. The Crew Escape System has also been validated with five types of motors developed and tested. Key infrastructure including preparation and training facilities as well as a dedicated control centre have been set up.

Singh also highlighted progress in precursor missions, communication networks, and crew recovery operations. He confirmed that hardware including the C32 G stage, HS200 motors, and Crew Module structures have been completed for the G1 flight.

The Gaganyaan 1 mission will see Vyommitra sent into space as part of India’s first human robot flight. India plans to send its first crewed mission in 2027, followed by Chandrayaan 4 in 2028, a mission to Venus, and the launch of the Bharat Antariksh Station by 2035.
